In this special Founder Series episode, host Maria Ceballos-Wallis interviews Elena Langdon, former Director of the ATA (American Translators Association), to shed light on the important role the association has had in advancing the translation and interpreting professions and fostering the professional development of its members.

ATA’s mission is to promote the recognition of professional translators and interpreters, to facilitate communication among its members, to establish standards of competence and ethics, to provide its members with professional development opportunities, and to advocate on behalf of the profession.

Elena Langdon is an interpreter trainer and a Portuguese-English community and conference interpreter, specializing in business, law, and medicine. She is a CCHI core-certified healthcare interpreter and an ATA-certified translator (Portuguese-English). Elena holds an M.A. in Translation Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She began teaching interpreting and translation in 2005. Since joining ATA in 2006, Elena has served as Administrator and Leadership Council Member, Portuguese Language Division (2007-2016). Currently, she is a writer for the ATA Public Relations Writers Group and Coordinator of the Professional Development Webinar Subcommittee (2018-present). Elena has served on the Boards of New England Translators Association (2015-2017) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (2009-2011). She began hosting and co-producing webinars for the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care in 2015.
